Conference Highlights

The annual conference of the Berkshire Association for Behavior Analysis and Therapy (BABAT), one of the nation’s oldest and most respected behavior analytic conferences, was held on October 14 and 15, 2010, at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst). The 31st annual conference was attended by 839 professionals. There were many highlights from this year’s conference—too many to mention!

Many distinguished speakers gave presentations, including Charlie Catania (University of Maryland, Baltimore County; pictured top left), Phil Chase (Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies), Peter Gerhardt (The McCarton School), Greg Hanley (Western New England College), Dorothea Lerman (University of Houston, Clear Lake), Mark O’Reilly (University of Texas), David Palmer (Smith College; pictured, bottom left), Cathleen Piazza (Munroe-Meyer Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center), Denny Reid (Carolina Behavior Analysis and Support Center), Joel Ringdahl (University of Iowa), Richard Smith (University of North Texas), Mark Steege (University of Southern Maine), and Bridget Taylor (Alpine Learning Group). Brian Deer, the Sunday Times of London Reporter who debunked one of the most controversial topics in autism treatment over the past 20 years, the autism-vaccine controversy, gave a fascinating and well-received address.

In addition, Phil Hineline (Temple University) was awarded BABAT’s sixth annual Murray Sidman Award for his enduring contributions to applied behavior analysis. Christine Fragale (pictured, middle left), from the University of Texas (Dr. Mark O’Reilly, advisor), was awarded $1000 (plus expenses) as the winner of the third annual BABAT Student paper competition. Catherine Taylor-Santa, from Caldwell College (Dr. Tina Sidener, advisor) was awarded $500 from the B.F. Skinner foundation for winning the BABAT Student Poster Competition, which was judged by Charlie Catania and Dorothea Lerman.
